  1. TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE

Lecturer: Prof. Claudio Babiloni, Sapienza University of Rome
Lecture title: Cortical resting state EEG rhythms in Alzheimer’s and Lewy body diseases

Wednesday, 14 April 2021 , 17.00 - 18.30 PM (UTC+2, CEST)

According to NIA-AA Research A-T-N Framework (Jack et al., 2018, Alzheimer’s & Dementia), the in-vivo assessment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is based on biomarkers of brain amyloidosis, tauopathy, and neurodegeneration. What about brain Neurophysiology? This talk will discuss converging EEG evidence showing that AD substantially affects cerebral neurophysiological ascending and thalamocortical systems regulating brain arousal and vigilance in wakefulness. Diseases with Lewy bodies also show substantial alterations in EEG activity during wakefulness but with differences in topography and frequency of that activity suggesting peculiar effects on brain arousal and vigilance.

Claudio Babiloni received a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and is Associate Professor of Physiology at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology “Erspamer” (Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine) at Sapienza University of Rome. His group investigates neurophysiological brain rhythms underpinning the regulation of vigilance and cognitive functions in aging with a focus on Alzheimer's and Lewy body diseases. Core methods are EEG techniques. His research was supported by European Community and the Italian Ministries of University and Health. The findings of his research were published in over 300 articles in international journals. Claudio is presently Chair of the ISTAART Electrophysiology Professional Interest Area and Senior Co-Chair of the Workgroup on "Advanced EEG Techniques in Clinical Neurophysiology" of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology.

August Stich was born in 1960 in Nürnberg, Germany. After his medical studies he specialised in internal and tropical medicine. In the last 25 years he had various assignments to tropical countries as medical doctor, health coordinator, advisor or research fellow, among others Zimbabwe, Somalia, Cambodia, Angola and Tanzania. He has a Master of Science degree of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he is still enrolled as lecturer. Today he lives and works in Würzburg, Germany, where he is the Head of the Department of Tropical Medicine of the Medical Mission Hospital (since 2004), the chairman of the Medical Mission Institute (since 2008) and Medical Advisor of the German Leprosy Relief Association (since 2009).
